It wasn't "ahead of its time." The Honda Prelude had 4WS back in 1988. Sure, Nissan spent some money on R&R for the HICAS system, but it was developed for the Skyline first, then handed down to the Z32. The Skyline was Nissan's flagship in Japan at the time, not the Fairlady. IMO, the system makes much more sense on a 4WD platform, but I believe it was just added to the Z32 chassis to serve more as "product differentiation," than a "major design feature." Believe what you want to believe, but your mentality of "how many other cars have this feature?" is probably what sold more 300ZX Twin Turbos in 1990, rather than performance statistics that might prove that HICAS gives the car a slight edge in handling performance (in stock form). Besides, the system is antiquated now, especially for the community of Z32 enthusiasts that modify their suspensions and add larger wheels with far more aggressive tires than what came standard on the Z32 back in the 90s. It really doesn't matter how it performed back then, because if you've spent any time and money updating the underside of the car, you should handle better anyways, HICAS or not.
